INTRODUCTION TO REMOTE LEARNING

MODELS OF TEACHING DURING COVID-19:

BLENDED LEARNING: Learning in part online with flexibility in location but teachers and students are present, both online and in classroom environments. Devices are used, which allows for personalized learning.

HYBRID MODEL: Type of blending learning many schools acquired during COVID-19 where students are divided per class to attend either Monday and Tuesday, or Thursday and Friday, with whole school remote (using Zoom or Microsoft Teams) on Wednesdays. On the days the students are not in person, they are remote (using Zoom or Microsoft Teams).

REMOTE MODEL: Students log on remotely using a platform such as Zoom or Microsoft Teams five days a week. They do not enter the school building.

LEARNING FROM HOME

  • Not every school will be providing the same things to families.

  • Some schools have distribution of technology.

    • Ex: sending home hotspots is an option, if you do not have access to Wifi at home.

    • Make sure to contact administration so that they can support you with any accommodations you may need.

    •

  • Write down all passwords and usernames & keep in a safe place.

  • Ask your school’s social worker or human resource personnel what the options are for childcare during the school day for children at home and/or learning remotely from home.

  • Make use of helpful daily task lists & learning from home schedules- build routines :).

What to Expect in a School Day

WHAT TO EXPECT IN A SCHOOL DAY

School schedules will vary from district and model (hybrid versus remote), grade, teacher preferences, independent work time etc.

Teachers should provide your child's schedule with the specifics of their day, when they need to log on and when they can log off depending on the day.

Here is an example of a remote school day!

Support Services

SUPPORT SERVICE: KNOW YOUR RIGHTS

  • Even when remote, students with disabilities are still legally required to have their individualized services offered to them

    • Special area services typically use a different Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Google Meets/etc. link for their class.

      • talk to your student's special education teacher for links & times to switch from the general classroom link.

  • If you choose to send your child to a private school, the state still is required to provide you services through public school

  • Evaluations and re-evaluations should still be taking place

  • Ask the school about your child’s specific disability to determine if they would require additional assistive technology to learn from home
